VOLTRON BRANDING AND PACKAGE DESIGN

Making a Legendary Impression

For over three decades, the Voltron legacy has captivated fans with its intergalactic saga of heroism and unity. As DreamWorks reimagined this classic for a new era, Playmates Toys recognized the need for updated Voltron branding and package design. They turned to McHale Design, a team with a proven track record of breathing new life into beloved franchises.

At McHale Design, we understand the power of nostalgia intertwined with modern appeal. Our Voltron branding and package design strategy was dual-forged: to ignite the imaginations of a new generation while honoring the memories of long-time enthusiasts. We crafted a visual language that speaks volumes, from the roar of the lions to Voltron’s iconic silhouette.

Since McHale Design had successfully faced similar challenges developing the TMNT brand, that experience helped propel the design process forward.

Our design journey with Voltron was fueled by the same passion that drives the brand’s fanbase. We delved deep into the essence of Voltron, emerging with package design reflecting the excitement of the new series. The result? A product presentation that stands tall on shelves, much like Voltron itself stands against the forces of evil. In addition to a GDUSA American Package Design award.

Combine for Action

The team had to communicate that some, but not all of the SKUs could combine to create a large-scale, multi-piece Voltron. Also, while maintaining a consistent brand identity across the entire line.

Our designers created a packaging template combining assets from the show with a proprietary, color-coded lion identification system highlighting the combinability of specific SKUs and clearly differentiating them from the rest of the line.

Armed with the success of the Netflix series, sales at Target, TRU, Walmart, and Amazon have continued to exceed expectations.

Let’s bring this same transformative energy to your brand, and together, we’ll forge a connection that transcends time and space.
